Punkin

Posted in Uncategorized at 11:40 pm by Deb

Our beloved cat, Punkin, died tonight from kidney failure.  Two years ago she drank some anti-freeze and miraculously survived.  We knew her life would be shortened, but were not expecting so sudden an end.  Thankfully, she went peacefully without pain, nor did she linger and suffer.  She was the best cat we have ever known and will be missed by all of us.  There is an antifreeze on the market that is non-toxic to animals.  It is a little more expensive, but well worth the extra cost.  Regular anti-freeze has the same chemical that is used to make artificial banana flavoring and is very attractive to animals.  Please safeguard our furry friends and consider using this alternative.  Ask your mechanic or local auto parts store.

I’m sorry to hear about your kitty. I love my cats and am awaiting the eminent demise of one of the old ones. He’s an ancient old siamese who just won’t let go… but I know it will be soon.

Regarding the antifreeze, I wasn’t aware there was a viable alternative to ethyl glycol — thanks for the heads up.

Here is more info on anti-freeze poisoning and alternatives:

Antifreeze is necessary for the life of your vehicle — but it’s one of the deadliest substances you can have around. Every year countless household pets, wildlife, even children are poisoned when they ingest antifreeze. It takes only two ounces to kill a dog — and as little as a teaspoon to kill a cat.

The primary reason for the high poisoning rate is anitfreeze’s sweet smell and taste, which attract animals (and small children) when the substance is spilled or leaks onto the floor. The sweetness is a result of the ethylene glycol base in standard antifreeze.

There are alternatives, however. Some companies are now making propylene-glycol-based antifreeze, which are far less toxic (in fact, propylene glycol is frequently used in consumer products such as cosmetics and medications).

To replace your standard antifreeze, first drain it completely and dispose of it according to local regulations (recycle it if possible). Flush the system with water and refill with the safer alternative formula.

She was the best cat ever, and I told her that often. i count myself lucky to live with two of her babies who inherented quite a few of her finer qualities.

She’s one cat who will be missed greatly and not forgotten anytime soon. I can see, many years from now talking with Spawn or RC2 or even the little Sweetie about cats and having it come up, “You know who was a good cat? Punkin.”

“Yeah, she was the best cat ever.”

    “Totally.”
